2020 was a personal best as far as readings went. At one point, I was reading about a book a week. The pandemic didn't necessarily give me any extra time. I just got an Audible account. EFFECTIVE! So I must use the word "read" lightly, but I'd say it still counts!
I'm a sucker for self-help books, specifically when it comes to growing my mindset. I believe that we can learn so much from reading books. We are truly in an age where information is in abundance, so why not take as much in as we can! I'll discuss a few of the books I read in 2020, and I'll let you know which one truly impacted my life in a huge way at the end of the article!
2020 was the year I discovered the amazing Jesse Itzler. It began with "Living with the Monks." In this book learned that inner peace is earned, and the power of "unplugging." I have a lot of work to do in this department. It's definitely going to require another read in 2021 as I relearn how to quiet my mind. Jesse is an entertaining author, and his writing style makes it seem as if I'm listening to stories from a friend. I'm going to do a deep dive on this book in the future.
I read "Talking to Strangers," by Malcom Gladwell. Malcom Gladwell always impresses me, and Talking with Strangers was no different. It had a meaningful message about the ways in which we do harm by not understanding the people we don't know. It taught me the power of sympathy. I walked away with a strong desire to be more keen on how I communicate with strangers. This one didn't take the top spot for 2020 because even though it had valuable information, it simply wasn't a page turner throughout most of the book.
I'll be doing a few deep dives on some other books, but I will not detail them too much in this article.
Start with Why by Simon Sinek
Own your Weird by Jason Zook
The First 90 Days by Michael Watkins
Good to Great by Jim Collins
Radical Candor by Kim Scott
and finally, Killing Kennedy by Bill O'Reilly
These are a few books from 2020 that I found to be amazing reads. I have a link to each of these in Amazon so you can see what they are about. (I am an Amazon Affiliate, which means that I will get a small percentage of purchases that you make on Amazon. This is at no cost to you.)
Jesse Itzler's New York Times best selling book, "Living with a SEAL" was my number one book for 2020! I read the hardcover of this book, and I'm glad I did. I couldn't put the thing down, and I enjoyed being able to truly focus in a way that I can't focus on Audible books. Again, Jesse's fun writing style captivated me. The stories of hardcore workouts in the middle of the night, and a larger than life figure yelling and barking commands in the office had me laughing out loud!
Living with a SEAL actually got me off my butt and in my running shoes. Every time I wanted to take a day off, I thought, "what would SEAL do?" He wouldn't take no for an answer. If you're looking for a book to get you motivated, look no further. Go check out Living with a SEAL on Amazon, and they'll have it delivered in no time at all.
